Julius Henry Marx, popularly known as Groucho, is the most recognized individual amongst Marx’s brothers. He is known for his contribution to the comedy industry. Groucho made people laugh at themselves for almost seven decades. His snappy, one-liner, and sharp wit style of comedy was unique and hard to forget.
Early Life
The talented actor was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. Marx’s father, Samuel, was a tailor. As a tailor, his father couldn’t make enough money to take care of the whole family. Marx’s mother, Minnie, had hope that her children would lead them into prosperity. She, therefore, stepped a foot forward and guided them through theatrical acts.
Personal Life
Groucho had three marriages, all of which ended in divorce. His first wife was Chorus Ruth Johnson whom he married at the age of 29. Ruth gave him two kids, Miriam Marx, and Arthur Marx. At the age of 54, Groucho married Kay Marvis, and together they had a daughter named Melinda Marx. His third wife was Eden Hartford, an actress.
Career
Marx’s brothers had a breakthrough in their career in 1914 when performing at a show in Texas. The brothers had put up an incredible show, putting aside the usual routines. They made fun of the audience. Groucho’s quick-witted quips won the audience’s hearts.
In the 1920s, Groucho and his brothers had become popular in theatrical acts. He even had trademarks under his name. Groucho isn’t only famous in the theatre scenes but is also celebrated writer. He has written several humorous books such as ‘Beds’ and ‘Many Happy Returns’ among many others. In the 1940s, Groucho Marx hosted various radio shows, which earned him an excellent reputation.
Death
In early 1977, the renowned theatre actor started struggling with health complications. After spending two weeks in a Los Angeles hospital, he died of pneumonia on August 19th, 1977.
