Early Life
Jean-Paul was born in Paris, France in the year 1905. He was son to Jean-Baptiste Sartre and Anne-Marie, to who he was their only child. His father served in the French Navy. His father passed away two years after his birth, after suffering from a disease he might have contracted while serving in the Navy.
He became attracted to philosophy in his teen years. He read the works published by Henri Bergson. He later attended Cours Hattemer which was a private school in France. He received certificates in the disciplines of psychology, history of philosophy, physics and many others.
He served in the French army as a meteorologist and spent close to year as a prison of war after being captured by the Germans. He was later released when his health deteriorated.
Personal Life
Sartre had an open relationship with Simone de Beauvoir whom they worked with as she too was a writer.
Career
Sartre wrote and published a number of works that challenges the status quo. His open relationship with another writer Simone de Beauvoir led to their questioning of the beliefs they were made to live baby since their birth that concerned cultural and social virtues.
His efforts saw him earn the Nobel prize in Literature in the year 1964. He was against the award since he was not for the idea of official honors and always believed that a writer is not an institution.
Death
Sartre passed away on 15 April 1980 after suffering from edema of the lungs.
