Early Life

Tolkien was born in the year 1982 at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State that is in South Africa. His parents were Arthur Reuel Tolkien and Mabel Suffield. They had just relocated from England after his father was transferred to South Africa. He left with his mother for England and his father, who was to join them died of Rheumatic fever in South Africa. 

He had to live with his mother’s parents because of lack of income on his father’s death. As a child he began reading a number of books even after the death of his mother. Later on in his life, he attended Exeter College, Oxford where he started by pursuing classics but then transferred to pursuing English language and literature. 

On his father side, his ancestors were mainly craftsmen that made clocks and pianos. His family had roots in the East Prussian. 

Personal Life

Tolkien was married to Edith Bratt from the year 1916 to 1971. Together they had four children; John Francis, Michael Hillary, Christopher John and Priscilla Anne. 

On Tolkien’s death, it was his son Christopher John that published his pieces that were incomplete on his death. This include The Silmarillion.  

Career

Tolkien is regarded as the father of fantasy stories because of the number of works he came up with. Before him, they were a number of authors that had published fantasy works but his own proved to be a breakthrough in this field. This is because of the popularity of his works; The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This two received massive embracing from the public and were hit almost immediately when released. 

He has continued to earn a lot from his fantasy works even after death making him ranked highly among the top-earning celebrities that have passed on. He came up fifth on this list. 

Death

Tolkien passed away on 3 September 1973, after the death of his wife, Edith, two years before.
