Managed to go through the conventional education system and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree despite being blind and deaf. She is credited for advocating for women equality and a fair share of employment opportunities with the opposite gender. In 1971, she became one of the few people to be inducted into the Alabama wall of fame.

Early Life

Helen was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama and lived with her siblings at their grandfather’s homestead. Her father was an editor at the North Alabamian newspaper and was an active serviceman where he served as a captain. At 19 years, she was diagnosed with an illness that affected her stomach and brain. The disease left her blind and deaf.

Personal Life

Helen Keller had no husband or children until the time of her passing. However, she had a close friend by the name of Anne Sullivan, who stayed with her and taught her until 1905 when she got married. Later on, Polly Thomson, a young Scottish woman, was hired to as a housekeeper where Helen was staying. She became a close friend to Helen Keller.

Career

Helen was a prolific writer who mostly wrote about her life and the challenges she was facing. Her books, The Story of My Life and Optimism were released in 1903. In 1908 her book The World I Live In was published. She went on a long break from writing and resume back in 1927 with the release of another book, My Religion

In 1938 she released a journal, Helen Keller’s Journal, that told more of her life journey. In 1957, she released The Open Door, a book that was meant to give hope to people living with disabilities.

Apart from writing books, Helen gave lectures with the help of an interpreter. Her earliest recorded lecture was in 1913. She would then proceed to open an endowment fund that amounted to two million dollars. Through her works, she managed to raise awareness for blind people in more than 30 states.

Death

Keller passed on while she was asleep on June 1, 1968. Her death was caused mainly by stroke.
