It was during his lifetime that medicine and science began to develop. He taught people that diseases were caused by nature and general lifestyle as opposed to superstitions and gods.
In his teachings, he always separated the subject of religion from medicine. He focused on the diagnosis and identifying the correct treatment that was specialized.
One of the major teachings of Hippocrates was “crisis.” The crisis was the point in which a sick person would either win against the disease or would succumb to death.
He taught his students to hope for the best when a patient is at this point and let nature take its cause. He believed that natural processes would help a patient who was in crisis to recover. However, after the crisis, there is a possibility of a relapse of the disease. Hippocrates believed in treatment that was specific.
This includes therapy that is guided by the disease that a patient was suffering from. His works and contributions have greatly influenced modern science, including the Hippocratic Oath, that is taken by doctors before they begin to practice.
