George Smith Patton Jr. is popularly known for his contributions as a general in the US Army. He led the US 7th Army in the Mediterranean theater of the Second World War. Also, in 1944, he commandeered the Third Army in France and Germany after the Allied Invasion of Normandy. 

Early Life

George, the General, was born in California on November 11th, 1885. He was the son of Ruth Wilson and George Smith Patton Sr. During his childhood, George faced difficulties in reading. Luckily, he overcame the challenge, and became a good reader. The army General attended homeschooling until he was eleven years when he joined Stephen Clark’s School for Boys. At school, Patton was termed as an intelligent student. He developed some love for the military at a tender age as he read a lot of classical military history. Also, George was a talented horse rider. 

Personal Life

On May 26th, 1910, Patton met the daughter of a Boston industrialist, Fredrick Ayer. Together, the couple had three kids, Ruth Ellen, George Patton, and Beatrice Smith. The couple stayed together until 1954 when Beatrice died while taking a horse ride. 

Career

Patton started his career in the military at the 15th Cavalry at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. During his first posting, George portrayed himself as a hard-driving leader and impressed his seniors. He later went to Fort Myer, Virginia. While there, Patton continued showing exemplary dedication towards the course. He befriended the then secretary of war, and his smart moves and commitment saw his rankings continue to rise.

Death

On December 8th, 1945, Patton got an invite from his chief of staff for a hunting trip near Speyer. During the journey, his car collided with an Army truck, and he sustained severe injuries. The General spent the next 12 days in the hospital, after which he died on December 21st, 1945.
