One of the many things that Colin Luther Powell is famed for is being the first black American to serve as the U.S. secretary of state. He was the 65th secretary to the state, serving between 2001 and 2005 under George Bush.

Early Life

Colin Powell was the son to Luther Powell and Maud Powell who were immigrants to the united states from Jamaica. Colin grew up in the South Bronx and schooled at public schools in New York. He graduated high school in 1954 from Morris High school. Colin later joined the City college of new york where he studied geology. It is at the City college were Colin Powell’s military career started serving as a unit commander in the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps.

Personal Life

Colin Powell met his wife Alma Johnson in 1958 while serving as a second lieutenant at Fort Devens. They later got married in 1962 and are blessed with three children: two daughters and a son.

Career

Colin Powel served in the U.S. military for 35 years from 1958 to 1993 and ended his military service as a four-star general. Colin Powell has 11 military decorations received while in service, including the coveted Legion of Merit.

Apart from serving in the military, Colin also served in the U.S. government in various positions. In 1987, he was appointed as the national security adviser by Ronald Reagan. He held this post throughout Reagan’s tenure.

Colin has also served the government of the United States, as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff in the George Bush administration. His appointment came in 1989. It is important to note that this position is the highest military position in the U.S.’s department of defense.

His final role in the U.S. government was when he served as the Secretary to the state from 2001 to 2005 under George Bush. He however resigned from his post in 2004 and was succeeded by Condoleezza Rice.
