Charles Haddon Spurgeon was popularly known for his style and volume of preaching. Often, he was referred to as ‘the prince of preacher’ as he preached many times in his life. During his ministry work, he published no less than 3000 sermons.

Early Life

Charles Haddon was born in England in 1834. His work for the Lord started at the age of 15 years when he got saved in a Methodist church. Surprisingly, about a year later, Haddon was taking shifts as a pastor. At the age of 17, Haddon was already a pastor in Cambridge, England (Baptist Church).

Before hitting 20, ‘the prince of preachers’ was called to serve as a pastor in the Baptist Church, London. The church was the largest in the region, but that didn’t hinder Charles from preaching despite his age. At the age of 22, the name Haddon was famous, and his congregation kept growing day and night.

Personal Life

 In 1956, Charles met Susannah Thompson and the two tied knots. The couple was blessed with twin sons, Thomas and Charles. His wife’s health wasn’t stable and was, therefore, not part of his public ministries. Charles also developed health complications later in his life and which led to his death. After his death, his sons took over his ministries. Charles Jr. took over the orphanage while Thomas took control of the Metropolitan Tabernacle.

Career

Haddon’s pastoral duties started when he was 16 years. Young Charles would fill in for his friend in a church. A year later, Charles was a pastor in a Baptist Church in England. In his early 20s, Charles was already leading one of the biggest church in London.

In his early ages, Charles had a huge congregation. He had to move from one auditorium to another to find a venue that would accommodate his ever-growing crowd. His audience had more than 10000 people and moved around with him until he built the popular Metropolitan Tabernacle. Charles served the church until his death, almost 40 years. 

Death

In his old age, ‘the prince of preachers’ suffered ill health. He suffered from Bright’s disease and rheumatism. The pastor died while recovering at Menton, France on 31st, January 1892.
