Early Life

Abraham Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was named after his paternal grandfather. Throughout his childhood and youth stage, Lincoln and his family moved from one town to another because of diseases and war, finally settling in Illinois.

He was self-educated for the better part of his life. He was married to Mary Tod in 1842and together they had four children, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, Willie Lincoln, and Thomas Lincoln. Edward, Willie, and Thomas never grew to continue the lineage as they died at young ages.

Profession

Records show that Abraham Lincoln earned his first dollar for transporting two men across the Ohio River. He later went on to become a very industrious man working as a rail splitter, cabinet maker, clerk, and carpenter.

He also served as a soldier. Abraham’s first encounter with war was when he volunteered in the Illinois Militia during the Black Hawk War. After the Black Hawk War ended in 1832, Lincoln ran for the Illinois legislature and was elected into office; he then went ahead to serve for four consecutive periods as the Illinois legislature.

While serving as a legislature, Abraham Lincoln started learning Law in 1834 on his own, with the help of Jon Stuart, an attorney at the time. Two years later Lincoln applied for his law license which was granted to him on September 9, 1836, at the Illinois state law courts. He was then admitted to the Illinois supreme court on March 1, 1837, as a lawyer.

In 1846, Abraham Lincoln was elected to the Congress as a Whig, where he served for only one term. Arguably the most notable point of Abraham’s career is when he became president of the United States of America, serving from the 4th of March 1861 to the 14th of April 1865 upon being assassinated.

Death

He was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Booth, a renowned stage actor. The assassination took place in Washington DC at the Ford’s Theatre while Lincoln was enjoying the play Our American Cousin. Lincoln passed on the following day, April 15, 1865, while receiving treatment at the Peterson Theatre. Abraham was America’s first president to die of assassination.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated when he was 56 years of age.
