Why do we use quotes?

Quotes are used in people’s everyday lives sometimes subconsciously and other times knowingly. Either way, there has to be a pretty good reason as to why people use quotes when communicating. This article has discussed a number of these reasons.

Using quotes makes one sound wise. It is therefore a good idea for you to memorize several quotes that you can use when conversing with peers. Throwing in one or two quotes in your talk will make you stand out from the rest. However, it is important to note that over-using quotes can backfire on you. This is because it makes you sound as if you lack any thoughts of your own.

Quotes make it easy to present your ideas quickly. Many quotes that are used today have been in existence for quite a while, and they’ve been taught and analyzed by many people, which has made them easy to understand. People find it convenient to use such quotes in cases where they do not wish to give detailed explanations.

People sometimes use quotes when wooing someone from the opposite of the opposite sex. In such a case, they are usually referred to as pick up lines. Love quotes are the ones used in most cases, and sometimes funny quotes can do the trick. You however do not want to use too many funny quotes when pursuing that man or woman as they may end up not taking you seriously.

Quotes are also used to add wit in a presentation. It is common for people to end up getting bored in a long meeting, especially where only presentations are made without involving the audience. Good speakers tend to use quotes to create humor, which helps capture the attention of the listeners. A witty speaker will be able to communicate better compared to one that does not use quotes at all.
