Early Life

Johannes Kepler was born on 27 December 1571 at Free Imperial City of Germany. His grandfather was once Lord Mayor of the city in which he was born in. at the time of his birth, he had three siblings. He was son to Heinrich Kepler who was a mercenary, he left the family five years after Kepler’s birth. His mother was called Katharina Guldenmann and was a daughter to an innkeeper. She herself was a healer, mainly using herbal medicine. 

Johannes was not that healthy when growing up and this might have been attributed to the fact that he was born prematurely. This did not stop him from amazing many of those that interacted with him using his mathematical knowledge. 

He developed a liking for astronomy when he was very young. He proved to be a skilled mathematician and astrologer all through the years. 

Personal Life

In the year 1595, he met a widow called Barbra Muller when she was 23 years old. She had a daughter from her previous marriage. The two started dating and the two later married. There were challenges against their marriage because Muller was quite wealthy as she had inherited a significant amount of wealth from her dead husband, she was also daughter to a rich man. Kepler was not in the same social class as her even after inheriting his grandfather’s massive wealth. 

Career

Among his first astronomical works was the Mysterium Cosmographicum which turned out to be a breakthrough in his career. He contributed to the discipline of optics and even developed the telescope that works on the principle of refraction. 

He was able to incorporate religious reasoning into his works. He also worked on pieces that provided a stepping stone on Newton’s theory on gravitation. 

Death

Kepler died from acute disease on 15 November 1630 at Free Imperial City of Regensburg.
