Early Life
Valvano was born on 10 march 1946 to Rocco and Angelina Valvano. His family was residing in Corona, Queens in the city of New York.
While in school he participated in three sports, that was while he attended Seaford High School that was located in Seaford. He eventually graduated in the year 1963. He said that his football coach, Vince Lombardi, was his main role model as he inspired him with his speeches which he also passed on to members of his team.
While in college, he played a point guard and that was in Rutgers university in the year 1967. He received awards for his exceptional performance such as being named as the university’s Senior athlete of the year in 1967. It was in the same year that he graduated from the university with a degree in English.
Personal Life
Valvano was married to his high school girlfriend, Pamela Levine. Together they had three daughters. He has a sibling who is a sports caster and was also a basketball coach.
Career
Jim kick started his coaching career right after graduation and he began by coaching his alma matter, Rutgers. He had a number of coaching jobs where he proved his mettle as he led his teams to win a number of titles.
It was in his victory as a coach in 1983 that he became popular after his team took the winning shot that meant they had won the title. He reacted by celebrating while running around the basketball court looking for a similarly enthusiastic fan to hug
Valvano was later forced to resign from his position as coach after a number of controversies.
Death
Jim Valvano passed away when he was just 47 years of age after battling a cancer that affected his bones.
