Early Life

Vanzant was born on 13 September 1953 in Brooklyn, New York in the back of a taxi. She is the daughter of Horace Harris and Sarah Jefferson. She was named Rhonda Eva Harris on birth.

Iyanla was raised by relatives from her father’s side after her mother succumbed to breast cancer when she was only two years old. One of her relatives took advantage of her when she was under their care. 

She divorced her first husband because he was physically abusive. She then left with their three children

Personal Life

Vanzant attended Medgar Evers College and Virginia Union University. She has a Juris doctor degree and a Master’s degree she attained from the University of Santa Monica. 

Her first marriage lasted for four years before she separated from her husband after being mistreated by him physically abusing him often. They were married from the year 1973 to 1979. She was married to Adeyemi Bandele from 1997 to 2007.

Iyanla has three children namely Gemmia Vanzant, Damon Vanzant and Nisa Vanzant all from her first husband. She lost one of her daughters to colon cancer in the year 2003.  Four years down the line, she divorced with her husband.  

Career

Iyanla Vanzant she has authored a number of great and inspiring books that have led to her popularity. She also appeared in Oprah Winfrey show and was interviewed about her practice and her beliefs. One of the books she authored includes Acts of Faith: Meditations for the People of Color.
