Early Life

Ingrid Bergman was born on 29 August 1915 at Stockholm to Justus Bergman and Frieda Henriette Auguste Louise. Her father was Swedish while her mother was from Germany. Her name, Ingrid, was after a princess of Sweden. She spent most of her early life in Sweden and partly in Germany, where she became fluent in speaking German. 

She lost both her parents at a very tender age, her mother dying when she was just two while her father when she was 13 years old. Her father took her for voice lessons as he wanted her to become an opera star. However, she always wanted to become an actress and hence began pursuing her vision. 

She later went to live with her aunt on the death of her father. She later received a scholarship that enabled her pursue her passion in acting.

Personal Life

She was married to a dentist in the year 1937 and they had one child. Her husband died in the year 2000. While married to the dentist, who later became a neurosurgeon she had an affair with a colleague known as Gregory Peck. 

She also had an affair with her Italian director Roberto Rossellini with whom they had a child.

Career

She had her debut in acting in the film Intermezzo: A Love Story, when she was brought America by David Selznick who was a producer. This film became a major success and hence Ingrid also became quite popular at that time. 

She was involved in a number of acting roles which included Casablanca, for whom the Bell Toll, Gaslight and many others which were quite successful. 

She later ventured into Italy due to her admiration of director Roberto Rossellini. The director featured her in one of his films called Stromboli. The two fell in love and had an affair that resulted in her having a child for him.

Death

Bergman died on 29 August 1982 when she had just turned 67 years of age. She succumbed to breast cancer.
