Early Life

Ilhan Omar was born in the year 1982 in Mogadishu, Somalia. Her father was a teacher trainer and she is the youngest of seven children. She lost her mother when she was just two years of age. This meant that she had to be brought up with her father, with the help of her grandfather. Her grandfather was the director of the country’s National Marine Transport and she had aunts and uncles working as civil servants. 

During the war in Somalia, her family fled and went on to Dadaab refugee camp that is on the border with Kenya. Her family then went to the United States and secured asylum immediately as soon as they arrived in New York in the year 1992. They spent most of their time in Arlington, Virginia before relocating to Minneapolis. Her father had to work as a taxi driver and in the post office to provide for them. 

Her father and grandfather emphasized on democracy during the time she was spent with them. She even acted as an interpreter for her grandfather in meetings. She then went on to attend Edison high school and graduated from North Dakota State university. She received a degree in political science and international studies. 

Personal Life

Ilhan was engaged to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi (ne’ Aden), but they could not finalize an application for their marriage. They were blessed with two children and later divorced in the year 2008. She later married Ahmed Nur Said and divorced him later on. 

Career

She began her career as an educator on nutrition at the university of Minnesota. She later worked as a campaign manager for Kari Dziedzic who was seeking a re-election to the Minnesota state Senate. She also served in the same capacity for Andrew Johnson. 

She later vied for the Minnesota House of Representatives in District 60B and won beating a number of candidates.
