Early Life

James Newell Sternberg Jr., popularly known as Iggy Pop, was born in Muskegon, Michigan in the year 1947 to Louella and James Newell Sternberg Sr. his father was a retired high school educator and baseball coach. Pop was brought up in a trailer park.

He started as a drummer for a number of school bands, the prominent of them being the iguanas, where his alias, Iggy, was derived from. He dropped out of university and relocated to Chicago to explore about blues as a music genre. Here he played as a drummer in the clubs. 

He was inspired when he watched Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger and James Brown perform on stage. This made him push the limits to on stage performance of rick music. This pushed him to perform a stage dive, one of the very first by that time. He is also knowing to perform bare chested and at times rolled on broken glass.

He played as the lead vocalist for the Stooges, who have been breaking up and coming back together repeatedly. He has a close relationship with Bowie who even visited him when he was in a medical institution to control his drug use.

He currently resides in Miami, Florida and has been married thrice to Wendy Weisberg, Sochi Asano and Nina Alum. From a relationship with Paulette Benson, he got a son named Eric Benson.

Iggy Pop has mainly worked with the band named the Stooges who have worked together and broke up severally. The band started by performing in small clubs because they had no record deal and later became famous. He has also enjoyed a working relationship with bowie, who he considers a close ally.
