Ian Fleming is the brains behind the famous movie character James Bond through a series of spy novels. 

Early Life

Fleming came from an affluent family where his father served as a Member of Parliament. He was born in Green Street in London. Young Fleming attended the Dunford preparatory School. In 1921, he joined Elton College, where he performed exceptionally in athletics.

Personal Life

Ian Fleming got married to Ann Charteris’ on March 24, 1952, in Jamaica. Together they had a son and the only child, Casper. 

Career

Ian Fleming worked for British intelligence, where he served under Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division during World War One.

 He participated in Operation Golden Eye and was one of the heads of two intelligence units. Through the experience that he gained during the war, he was able to write and create the character of James Bond in his novels. 

His first Bond novel was Casino Royale that was released in 1952. The book was a success and was published three consecutive times. This was followed by 11 James Bond books and other short stories. The storyline was about a secret intelligence officer going by the name James Bond who served in the British Spy unit known as M16.

The character James Bond had a code number 007 that was only known to those in the ranks of M16. Ian Fleming’s books became famous and were used by movie directors to create the famous James Bond Movies, with the last one being Casino Royale released in 2006. The book sold a total of 100 million copies across the world. Apart from the James Bond books, Fleming also wrote a children storybook titled Chitty- Chitty- Bang- Bang.

Death

Fleming passed away in February 1964 at the age of 54 from a cardiac arrest.
