Early Life

Gregor Mendel was born in Australia to Anton and Rosine Mendel. His early days as a young man were spent in his father’s farm until age 11. Later on he was sent to a secondary school in Troppau. He graduated from the school in 1884. Later on, Mendel enrolled for a two- year program at the University of Olmutz. He excelled academically and even taught at the school part time. Mendel graduated from the University in 1884.

Personal Life

Gregor Mendel chose to live as a monk after completing his University education. However, his was against his father’s wishes. It is there where he was given the role of a teacher at a secondary school.He taught at the school for 10 years. Mendel had no known wife or kids.

Career

Gregor Mendel was known for his experimental work with pea plants. He spent seven years in his Abbey garden observing, breeding pea plant. Mendel concentrated on one trait at a time and was able to gather data on different variations he observed over the period of time. Through his work, he was able to discover that when he bred a pure breed of peas, one type of variation would disappear as the generations progressed. 

On the other hand, when the peas were left to self- pollinate, the generations that followed would have a crossbreed of variations. He referred to the missing variation as “recessive” and the one that remained “dominant.”
