George discouraged over-reliance on cotton farming and encouraged farmers to plant alternative foods like sweet potatoes and peanuts for their consumption. 

George Carver was at the frontline in promoting environmentalism. Through his activism, he received awards like Springam Medal. 

Early Life

George Washington Carver was born in Diamond, Missouri in the mid-1860s. George was a slave to a German master, Moses Carver, who had earlier on bought his parents Mary and Giles. George was kidnapped when he was a week old night raiders from Arkansas. They sold him as a slave in Kentucky. 

Later on, he was repossessed by Moses Carver after negotiating with the raiders. His parents and sister died on the way, leaving George as the only survivor. With the abolishment of slavery, Moses and his wife raised George as their child. 

Due to racial rules, young George could not attend any school in Diamond Grove. He walked for 16 kilometers to the south of Neosho. He relocated later and found a foster family in Kansas. Then, he graduated from Minneapolis High School in Kansas.

Personal Life

Carver had no wife during his lifetime. His biographer Peter Burchard revealed that Carver was Castrated when he was age 11 at the request of his master.

Career

Carver dove into teaching and research after his graduation from Iowa State. In 1886 Booker T. Washington hired George Washington to manage the Agriculture department of the Black Tuskegee Institute. He improved the department tremendously. 

He focused on hands-on training and research with the primary focus being crop rotation for the betterment of the soil and adaptation of other cash crops like soybeans, sweet potatoes and peanuts. He invented various products from peanuts such as milk, plastics, paints and medicine oils. 

George also discovered how to make vinegar, rubber, flour, molasses, and postage stamp glue from sweet potatoes. In the period ranging from 1923 to 1933, George promoted racial harmony and co-existence by touring white colleges and giving speeches.

Death

At age 78, Carver died on January 5, 1943.
