Famously known for

George Shaw, as known by many people, was well known for his contributions to the culture, politics, and western theatre from the 1880s until the time of his death. During his career, George wrote over 60 plays, which included works such as Saint Joan, Pygmalion, and Man and Superman. His work revolved around history and contemporary satire and thus, becoming a lead dramatist in that period. The writing saw him scoop a Nobel Prize in Literature. 

Early Life

George’s father Carr was an unsuccessful grain merchant, and hence George’s childhood was full of poverty. Often, he would be tutored by his uncle. By the age of 16 years, the political activist was working in a land agent’s office. In his 20s, Shaw encountered extreme poverty and had to move in with his mother and sister, where he depended on his mother for upkeep. 

Personal Life

George met Charlotte Payne-Townshend in 1898, and they got married. Charlotte was from a wealthy family, and the two moved in together in Hertfordshire village, St. Lawrence. Although the political activist was linked to other women, he remained loyal to Charlotte until her death. 

Career

At the age of 16 years, and out of poverty, George has started working in a land’s agent office. In 1876, George decided to become a writer, although it wasn’t comfortable taking off. Later on, he found himself and became a socialist, spellbinding orator, polemicist, playwright, and a vegetarian. He was the force behind the Fabian Society, which was founded in 1884. In 1885, George found steady work with critic William Archer. His career thrived when he started working for Frank Harris as a theater critic. The job ran from 1895 to 1898.

Death

George Shaw died at Ayot St. Lawrence, Hertfordshire, on November 2, 1950.
