Famously Known For

Galileo Galilei was famously known as the ‘father of modern science,’ having studied speed, velocity, and gravity.

Galilei invented the thermoscope and used a telescope for scientific observations.

As one of the first modern thinkers, he stated that the laws of nature are mathematical.

Though less known, Galileo was first known to have understood sound frequency.

Early Life

As the firstborn of six children, Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy in the year 1564 February 15th to his parents Vincenzo Galilei and Giulia. He was educated the years between 1575 and 1578 in Valiombrosa Abbey after his family moved to Florence.  He stayed behind for two years under the care of Jacopo Borghini.

Personal Life

Galileo considered priesthood as a young adult though he enrolled for a Medical Degree at the University of Pisa in 1580.

Career

In 1586, he invented the Thermoscope and published a book on the design of Hydrostatic which he had also studied.

He taught at the Accademia delie Arti del Disegno in Florence in 1588.

In 1589, he chaired Mathematics at the University of Pisa.

He moved to the University of Padua where he taught Geometry and Astronomy.

Having invented the first practical telescope in 1608, he improved another version of the same the following year.

Later in life, while blind, he designed a pendulum clock known as ‘Galileo’s escarpment.’

In 1615, Galileo was asked to abandon his findings based on the opposition of the Bible by the Roman acquisition. He was thought to have attempted to interpret the Bible. Galileo, charged with heresy and in 1834, he was placed under house arrest where he spent time making a summary of the work, he had done for his previous forty years.

Death

Aged 77, Galileo Galilei died on 8th January 1642 after suffering a fever and a heart condition.
