Fred Allen, born John Florence Sullivan, was a celebrated comedian. His radio program, The Allen Show, which aired between 1932 and 1949, saw him join the list of the most famous humorists in the era. 

Early Life

Fred Allen, as popularly known by many people, was born and spent most of his childhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Allen never got the chance to know his mother as she died while the author was around three years. After his mother’s death, Allen and his brother moved in to stay with their mother’s sister. 

His father, on the other end, was much affected by the death of Allen’s mother. He turned alcoholic and irresponsible. This left Allen’s aunt with a heavy baggage to deal with as her husband was partially paralyzed from lead poisoning. Later on, Allen’s fathers got another wife giving Allen and his brother the choice to either move in with him or stay at their aunt. Allen chose to stick with his aunt, a decision that he never regretted, according to his writings. 

Personal Life

Fred met Portland Hoffa in 1927, and the two became a thing. The two remained married until 1956 when Fred met his death. 

Career

In 1914, Fred was working in a library when he took another job with a local piano company. The comedian appeared in various amateur competitions. The appearances saw him take a stage name Fred St. James. Later on, the comedian booked with the local circuit, where he earned $30 every week. Later on, Fred would become a popular radio entertainer on the The Allen Fred Show which ran between 1932 and 1949.

Death

On the fateful night of March 17, 1956, Allen was taking his usual night stroll on 57th Street, NY when he got a heart attack. The famous comedian died instantly at the age of 61 years.
