Euripides is known as one of the unique Playwrights of Ancient Athens history. He wrote drama plays adapted to comedy over the centuries, tragic and comic poems that were very popular.

His Play ‘Medea’ first produced in 431 BC did not do well during his time. Playwrights have explored it over the centuries.

In 455 BC, he won his first prize in the then famous Athenian Dramatic Festival. Almost all his plays were mythically drafted to talk of the present with the use of the past. 

Early Life

Born in Salamis Island, Athens in 480 BC, Euripides was born to Mnesarchus and Cleito. He studied Philosophy and Painting. On stage, he served as a torch-bearer and dancer.

Personal Life

Euripides married twice, to Melite and Choerine. From his second marriage with Choerine, they had three boys. Unlucky for him, neither of his two marriages was able to work out. which lead him to live a secluded life in Salamis in a cave he built.

Career

Known as a unique Writer in Ancient Athens history, Euripides first won his prize in 455 BC in Athenian Dramatic festivals.  During his time, he wrote tragic plays which playwrights contested for while actors won. Most of his work from the 5th Century BC was found in modern editions over the centuries. Also, in 200 BC, some of his play work circulated in selected school plays.

Death

Euripides built his home in a cave where he shared his life with the sea and sky.  He is known to have died in exile in Macedonia in old age of 74 years in 406 BC. Even after his death, his plays were performed and won first prize five times in the then Athenian Dramatic festivals.
