Famously Known For

Epicurus is famously known for being the first person to establish a school that admitted women in Greek. Apart from accepting women into his school, he is also famously remembered for his teachings on death. According to him, a human being ceased to live the moment they decided to fear death. The teachings taught that; there were no divine creatures that had power over beings, and there is no afterlife. 

Epicurus is also known as a famous writer that was able to write more than 300 works; the writings were on different subjects. 

His teachings were not widely known until the 17th Century with the help of a French priest who helped modify them.

Early Life

Epicurus was born in February 341 BC in an Island in Samos, Greece to his parents Neocies and Chairestrate. He studied under a Samian Platonic for almost four years of his early ages. He began to study philosophy at the age of 14.

Out of his 300 works on different subjects, only three of his letters were found. One of the letters suggested that he was trained as a persuasive writer and speaker.

Personal Life

Epicurus is known to have not married or had any children. However, he is known to have celebrated his birthday annually with his friends eating meals befitting a hero. His friends considered him a hero. Through his philosophical work, he is known to have lived a peaceful and cheerful life with his friends.

Career

At thirty- five years of age, he started teaching at Mytilene but left. Insisting on being self-taught, Epicurus went back to Athens in 306 BC where he opened his school where he taught until his death. This school was named after his garden, Ho Kepos, which he used for meetings with his friends.

Death

Epicurus is said to have died at 270 BC at 71 years of age.
