Epictetus was a stoic Greek philosopher. His philosophical was published and written down in discourses and Enchiridion by his pupil Arrian.

Early Life

Epictetus was born a slave in Hierapolis, Phrygia. No knows his real name given by his parents is unknown. Epictetus in Greek means gained or acquired. His youth was spent in Rome as a slave to a wealthy freedman called Epaphroditus, who was a secretary to Nero.

When growing up at an early age, Epictetus grew passion for philosophy and started studying under Musonius Rufus.  He started getting respected because of his growth in education. 

Personal Life

Epictetus’ life was a simple one with a few possessions. He lived for a long time, and at old age, he adopted a child who needed aid. Together with some woman, they raised the child. It is not known if he was married to the woman.

Career

Epictetus began to teach philosophy in Rome after getting freedom due to the death of Nero in 68 AD. When Emperor Domitian sent away philosophers from the city, Epictetus went Epirus where he started a philosophical school. Arrian was a his famous student. 

Arrian describes him as a powerful speaker who could make someone feel what he wanted them to feel. Epictetus teaches that knowledge is the most profound foundation of philosophy. Ignorance and gullibility should be studied to know how to deal with it.

He advocated the use of logic and reasoning in decision making and application of the philosophical doctrines. He was more of a practical man living on the virtues of stoic philosophy.

His philosophy is well known all over the world. It is indifferent field like literature, military, leadership, psychology, religion, and acting. He is a well-respected man.

Death

Epictetus died in 135 AD at the age of 80.
