Early Life

Eleanor’s childhood was an unhappy one having lost both her parent at an early age and also one of her brothers. She was born in Manhattan, New York to socialites Ann and Elliot. Eleanor was born into a lot of wealth and privilege; her family was in the upper echelons in New York City called the swells.

She joined Croton School in 1907. At the age of fifteen, she attended Allenwood Academy in London, and she says her headmistress Marie Souvestre influenced her.

After the death of her parents, she was raised by her maternal grandmother.

Personal Life

In 1902 Eleanor met his fifth cousin franklin on a train, and they began a secret romantic relationship getting engaged the following year. Although Franklin’s mother opposed their union, they were determined, and on March 17, 1905, they got married. Together, they had six children.

Career

Eleanor was an outspoken first lady, especially on civil rights for African-American. She did press conferences, weekly radio shows, wrote on newspapers and magazines and also spoke at national party conventions.

She did not fear to disagree with her husband on some government policies. Eleanor fought and encouraged expanded roles of women in workplaces and advocated Asian and blacks’ rights and the rights of World War II refugees.

Even after her husband died, she remained inactive politics taking roles in the UN Commission on Human Rights as the first chair.

Death

In 1960 she died of aplastic anemia after an accident by a car and in 1862 at 78 years.
