Edgar Allan Poe was best known for his Poetry and Short Stories.
His tale, ‘The Murders in the Rue Mortuary’ was described as the first Detective story. ‘Loss of Breathe’, his 1846 tale inspired by rapid scientific development in the 19th Century, contributed to medicine and literature being intertwined.
Poe was recognized as a Literary Critic which earned him a reputation of ‘tomahawk man’
He was more popular in Europe for translations of his fiction work than in the United States of America resulting in being the first American Author in the 19th Century.
His detective fiction work laid the groundwork for future detective works of literature.

Early Life
Edgar Allan Poe was born to David and Elizabeth Poe in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother died a year after his father abandoned him in 1810. Unable to fund his education due to gambling debts, Poe dropped out of University and enlisted in the United States Army in 1827, where his publishing career thrived.
Personal Life
Poe was engaged to Sarah Elmira Royster during his university days in Virginia of 1826 but he lost touch with her. He married his 13-year old Cousin, Virginia Clemm on 16th May 1836 in Baltimore. She died on January 30th, 1847.
Career
Popularly known as the first writer to live on writing alone, he suffered financial hurdles.
He enlisted in the United States Army on 27th May 1827, where he released the first 40-page collection of his poems.
His detective fiction work laid the groundwork for future detective works of literature.
Death
Found in the streets of Baltimore, Poe was taken to the Washington Medical College where he died on October 1849 aged 40.
