Dwight David Eisenhower is well known for serving as an army officer and also as the 34th United States president.

Early Life

Dwight was born in Denison, Texas in a family of seven sons. His parents were poor, which made life difficult for the boys while growing up. Soon after Dwight’s birth, his parents moved to Abilene where they settled. The impoverished status of his family forced Dwight to appreciate the value of working hard while he was still young. He sold vegetables to support his family and also worked for a creamery.

In school, Eisenhower was among the average students, and he developed a particular liking for History. Dwight finished his high school studies from Abilene High school and stayed home the following year to labor so that he could raise tuition fees for his older brother’s college fee.

He joined the West Point military school in 1911 and graduated from the school in 1915.

Personal Life and Career

Dwight David married Mamie Doud in 1916. They got two sons Doud Dwight and John Sheldon Doud.

Dwight served in the army in world war one, as a tanker crew trainer. During the war, Dwight served under several generals and with time, he rose to the rank of brigadier general in 1941. During the second world war, Dwight led the North Africa invasion and Sicily invasion. He also led the invasion of Germany and France as the war progressed. After the end of world war two, Dwight was appointed as Army chief of staff.

Eisenhower has also served as the president to Columbia University between 1948 and 1953.

Dwight Eisenhower took his first shot at the presidency in 1952 against Robert A. Taft and emerged victorious in the elections. He again beat Robert in the 1956 elections to serve a second term as U.S president.

Death

Dwight died of Congestive Heart failure while receiving treatment at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He died aged 78.
