It is important to note that Catherine was the daughter to George Hogarth, an editor to the Evening Chronicle where Charles worked as a journalist. Their marriage only lasted for 24 years as they separated in the year 1858. Their divorce was brought about by Dickens’s new relationship with 18-year-old Ellen Ternan, an actress in one of Dickens’ play, The Frozen Deep.

Career

After finishing his formal education, Charles Dickens began writing short stories and essays for periodicals in their region. His first published story was A Dinner at Popular Walk which appeared in England’s monthly magazine in December 1833. From there onwards, Charles became a reporter and novelist using the pseudonym Boz.

His first book was published in 1836, titled Sketches by Boz; it was a collection of short stories. Charles also began a series of readings which gained massive popularity and funds too. He was able to carry out more than 400 readings in his lifetime.

Death

Charles Dickens passed on in 1870, after suffering a heart attack while in Peckham. Ellen Ternan, together with the workers, took Charles back to Gad’s hill, an estate Charles had bought for himself. He died at Gads Hill place aged 58.
