Famously Known For

Charles Darwin is well remembered as a great biologist for his theory of evolution and his explanation of natural selection.

His theory of evolution explained that species survived through natural selection. The approach suggested that only those organisms that were able to adapt to their changing environments survived, those that didn’t die off and became extinct.

Early Life

Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, in 1809. He was from a wealthy background, which gave him the privilege to travel and explore nature. He studied at the University of Edinburgh for two years, and after refusing to take up medical science, his father transferred him to Christ’s college in Cambridge where he studied arts. Personal life

Charles Darwin married one of his cousins, Emma Wedgwood. Darwin’s had ten children, but two of them died as infants. Being a devoted and a scientist father, Darwin was often worried when any of his children got sick, assuming that it was being caused by the inbreeding that resulted from marrying his cousin.

Career

Darwin’s career was kick-started by his voyage aboard the HMS Beagle in 1831. After graduating from Christ’s college in 1831, Darwin’s professor John Stevens, who had been his mentor recommended Charles for a position on the HMS Beagle.

The voyage that took five years gave Darwin the chance to collect different specimens, such as birds and fossils. This helped him in his research on the principles of Botany, zoology, and geology. In 1836 when they returned to England, Charles Darwin published his findings in the Journal of Researches.

Death

In 1882, Darwin was diagnosed with coronary thrombosis, which led to heart failures and angina attacks that claimed his life. Charles Darwin passed on in his family home on April 19, 1882, aged 73.
