Alfred Lord Tennyson was one of the greatest poets during the Victorian Age in England.

His work In Memorium had Queen Victoria request for an interview with him after she was impressed with the poem.

In 1842 Alfred published several poems cementing his reputation as a poet. His poem Charge of the Light Brigade reflected mostly on the Victorian Age and led to patriotism and the horrors of war.

Early Life

Alfred Lord Tennyson was the fourth born in a family of 12 children. His father was a rector. In 1815 his two brothers Charles and Frederick were taken to grammar school in 1815 in Lourth. At an early age, Tennyson began suffering from mental breakdowns, which were mostly contributed by alcoholism. 

One of Tennyson’s brother was confined to a mental institution while the other got addicted to opium. In 1827 he fled from home to attend Trinity College in Cambridge. It is at that year that he and his brother Charles released Poems by Two Brothers. The poems attracted the attention of the “Apostle,” a literally club by undergraduate students led by Arthur Hallam. 

Personal Life

During the wedding of his brother Charles, in 1836, Alfred fell in love with Emily, the bride’s sister. However, Emily’s father disapproved the couple due to Alfred’s Bohemianiasm, addiction to port, and his liberal religious views. 

Career

In 1826 Alfred together with his two brothers; Frederick Charles published Poems by Two Brothers. His contribution was more than half of the volume.

In 1827 he joined his two brothers at Trinity College. Alfred, through his friend Arthur Hallam, managed to join the Apostles. In 1829, Alfred won the chancellor’s gold medal for his poem Timbuctoo. 

In 1832, he published another volume of poems which included poems like The Lotos Eaters, the Palace of Art and The Lady of Sharlott. In 1833 after the death of Hallem, Alfred released The Two Voices.”

Death

Tennyson died on October 6, 1892 from the flu.
